Setting up Summa

Vocabulary highlights work the moment you install. To turn on premium annotations, references, allusions, and context, use one of the two options below.

1. Install and open Summa

Download the app, drag it to Applications, and open it. Summa lives in your menu bar, not in a window. On first launch it asks for Screen Recording permission, that is how it reads the page you are on. Grant it and relaunch if prompted. Open Settings from the menu bar icon.

Option A: Enter a beta access code

The simplest path. In Settings → Premium AI Account, paste your code into the Beta access code field. That is it. Requests run through Summa's server, so nothing else to configure and no key to manage.

Don't have a code yet? Request one here.

Option B: Bring your own Anthropic API key

Prefer to run it on your own account with no usage limit? In Settings → Premium AI Account, expand Advanced: direct API key and paste an Anthropic key (it starts with sk-ant-). Summa then calls Anthropic directly and you are billed by Anthropic for what you use.

You can create a key at console.anthropic.com under API Keys. A little usage goes a long way; reading a full chapter is typically a few cents.

That's it

Start a session, open any book, PDF, or article, and hover a highlighted term. If premium is on you will see references and editorial glosses, not just word definitions. If something is not working, the contact page is the fastest way to reach me.
