Effective
These terms cover the Summa Mac app, this website, and the beta annotation service operated by Joseph Ruocco. By using Summa, you agree to them. You can ask questions through the contact form.
Using Summa
You may install and use the app to read material you have permission to access. You must be at least 13 and able to agree to these terms. If your local law requires a parent or guardian’s permission, get that permission before using Summa.
You remain responsible for the text you send through Summa. Obtain any permission needed before sending copyrighted or confidential material to an AI provider. A book’s availability online does not settle its copyright status in your country.
Screen access and data
Summa needs macOS Screen Recording permission to read a window. During an active session it can follow you into another app. When AI annotations are enabled and configured, visible text and the window title leave your Mac as described in the Privacy Policy.
Check the current window before using Summa with private material. See How Summa works for the controls that pause capture or revoke permission.
Beta codes and costs
Beta codes provide access to Summa’s annotation server. Keep yours private and use the service through the app for reading. Attempts to bypass access checks or overload the server can lead to revoked access.
The pricing page describes the current free beta. If you supply an API key, you are responsible for charges on that provider account. Service availability and provider usage limits still apply.
Annotations and outside services
Summa can misread text or return an incorrect note. Verify references before relying on them in your work. The app uses outside services whose availability and terms affect the features they provide.
Books and reference material remain subject to their owners’ rights and applicable licenses. These terms give you no ownership of third-party text or exclusive rights to generated notes.
Feedback
When you submit feedback, you allow me to use it to answer your message and improve Summa. Send material you have permission to share. The feedback form can include text and a document title supplied by the app; review them before submitting.
Availability and responsibility
Summa is an early beta provided as is and as available. Features can change, and access can stop because of cost or technical problems.
To the extent the law allows, I disclaim warranties about accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, and uninterrupted operation. I am not responsible for indirect or consequential losses from using Summa. These terms preserve any rights or remedies that applicable law does not let you waive.
Stopping use and updates
You can stop using Summa by quitting and uninstalling it. Local files and preferences can remain after uninstalling; the Privacy Policy explains where they are stored.
Revised terms will appear on this page with a new effective date. Read them before continuing to use a changed service. Contact me if you need help ending beta access.
